Rutland Music

Rutland Music is an independent charity, formed to oversee delivery of the National Plan for Music Education for the children and young people of Rutland.  Working with Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust (as the lead partner) and a range of local deliverers, Rutland Music Hub will support all schools and develop musical opportunities for the county.

Services for schools

Rutland Music is the delivery agent for the Music Education Hub in Rutland and works with primary schools across the county to ensure the National Plan for Music Education is delivered and every student experiences musical opportunities during their primary school career.

All projects and services are designed to support existing provision and deliver the National Plan.

Services can be booked via the online Service Level Agreement, which is sent to schools via letter and email soon after the Easter break.  Information to guide you through the booking process can be found below – we have also created a prompt sheet to help you to gather all the necessary information before completing the online form.  The online form, linked on the letter and email sent to your school, must be completed in one sitting.  If you need additional help or support please contact Maggie Boothby, Lead Teacher: rutlandmusic@nmpat.co.uk

Every child must have the opportunity to sing at school, according to the National Plan for Music, and a vocal strategy must be in place in school in order to access your National Music Grant funding.

Rutland Music are able to deliver Let’s Sing vocal projects, which you can pay for using funding, or you can deliver the strategy in school and use your funding for other Hub services.

A Let’s Sing project is made up of 5 or 6 weekly visits to a school by a vocal development specialist, to support singing in the classroom. Each visit will consist of at least 45 minutes of delivery to a class of up to 30 pupils.
The appropriate project, and number of projects needed, will depend on the size of your school and existing strengths.

The cost of a 5-week project is £250.
The cost of a 6-week project is £300.

To support the strategy, all schools may request fully funded access to Sing Up. We can also provide support for singing assemblies and school choirs upon request.

If you choose to deliver the core activities (vocal and recorder strategies) yourselves, you must commit to providing data about the children taking part in the project for Arts Council England and the Department for Education and be prepared to accept a monitoring visit.

The descant recorder is the instrument of choice for the county, and all schools must be delivering a recorder strategy to meet the challenges of the National Plan, and to access your allocation of funding from the National Music Grant.

You can purchase a Let’s Play Recorder project from Rutland Music, using your funding allocation, or deliver the strategy yourselves and use your allocation to access other Hub projects.

A Let’s Play Recorder project consists of 10 weekly visits, designed so that an entire class can access this experience. Each visit is made up of at least 45 minutes of delivery to up to 30 pupils.

The cost of a 10-week recorder project delivered by Rutland Music is £460.

If you choose to deliver the core activities (vocal and recorder strategies) yourselves, you must commit to providing data about the children taking part in the project for Arts Council England and the Department for Education and be prepared to accept a monitoring visit.

Every school is able to book a fully-funded KS1 music project, which consists of 5 weekly visits, designed so that an entire class can access this experience. Each visit is made up of 30 minutes of delivery to up to 30 pupils.  Additional projects can be requested at a cost.

The cost is £205 per additional project where a second visit to the school is required.

The cost is £115 per project where delivery is during the same visit as other projects.

Rutland Music is able to offer schools 5-week projects designed to support pupils’ mental and emotional wellbeing in the classroom. As all learning is emotional state-dependent, we propose a musical curriculum which supports the NHS 5 Steps to Wellbeing:

  • Connect with other people
  • Be physically active
  • Learn new skills
  • Give to others
  • Pay attention to the present moment (mindfulness)

Through a carefully crafted unit of 5 lessons which include mindfulness, singing, listening, breathing exercises, movement, body and found-object percussion work led by a member of Rutland Music staff, pupils will:

  • Possess the tools, skills and language to describe and handle their emotions
  • Build stronger connections, find commonalities with their peers, and widen their perceptions
  • Be more mindful and be better equipped to handle stress in their lives
  • Have gained musical knowledge and skills which can be applied to any instrument or voice

Projects are intended for:

  • Whole classes in Key Stage 1 or 2
  • Classes or smaller groups of pupils that are identified as struggling emotionally or socially

In order for the project to take place, the Rutland Music staff member will need:

  • A classroom or large space that is preferably free of clutter, with chairs
  • If possible: access to an Interactive White Board and sound system
  • Another responsible adult in the room i.e. Class Teacher or TA

The cost is £250 per project.

Rutland Music have a history of delivering highly successful drumming projects, which provide students with further musical opportunities.

Projects last for a whole day or half day and are designed for classes of up to 30 pupils, leading to a performance for the school. We can also offer shorter sessions for multiple classes.

Our practitioners will lead your children in African Drumming or Samba, depending on staff and equipment availability.

Half-day drumming project: £200
Whole day drumming workshop: £315

Projects could be funded using the National Music Grant funding, if you have chosen to deliver the core activities in school instead of requesting Let’s Sing or Let’s Play Recorder projects.

Rutland Music is committed to expanding the range of opportunities available and would be interested in broadening the offer in schools, beyond the core recorder projects.  As such, we are able to run some First Access projects for orchestral instruments and the ukulele. Projects could be designed for a whole class or a large elective group. Two members of staff would deliver a project lasting 10 weeks with each visit consisting of 45-60 minutes delivery.

The staff could be two visiting specialists or one visiting specialist working in partnership with your own teacher, where they have relevant skills to take an equal part in the delivery.

  • Option A: two visiting specialists from Rutland Music Hub: £1,200
  • Option B: one visiting specialist, delivering in partnership with a member of school staff: £700

All projects are dependent on instrument availability. Please indicate your interest below and we will be in touch to discuss options with you.

If you are delivering Core Activity projects (vocal and recorder strategies) yourselves, any remaining allocation of National Music Grant money can be used towards orchestral instrument projects.

To support school staff in delivering music in schools, subscriptions to various online resource services are available including Charanga and Music Express.  It is more cost effective for you to purchase subscriptions to these resources directly, as we are no longer able to offer a Hub discount.

Bespoke consultancy

In addition to our annual free CPD conference for Music Leads, we are happy to support all aspects of your school’s musical development in providing bespoke consultancy support for:

  • induction of new staff
  • support for non-specialist teachers
  • developing a music curriculum within your school
  • teaching and learning in the music classroom
  • support for Arts Mark application
  • preparation for Ofsted

Activity plan for students

Rutland Music Hub is a partnership of organisations committed to delivering the aims of the National Plan for Music Education, for the children and young people of Rutland, according to the following activity plan:

The descant recorder is the core instrument for Rutland, meaning that every child attending school will have the opportunity to learn about the basics of music notation and the elements of music.

Some schools will choose to self-deliver this across the academic year, others will choose what is known as a “First Access Project”. This is a 10-week project delivered to a whole class of students at once, and is usually supported by visiting music specialist teachers.

It is hoped to grow the scope of orchestral First Access projects within the county and there are already ukulele, brass and string projects taking place in some schools.

These projects are delivered using funding from the Governments National Music Grant and no cost is passed on to parents. In some cases, there may be opportunities for students to continue their learning in small group lessons, where there is usually a cost involved.

All schools have the responsibility of ensuring that every child has the opportunity to sing during their time at school.

Rutland Music can provide 5 or 6 week projects to support individual classes, school choirs or singing assemblies for the whole school.

There is no cost to parents for these projects.

Drumming projects have proven to be extremely popular with both African Drumming and Samba available.  These usually take place for a day of half day and culminate in a performance to the rest of the school.

Places are very limited so not all schools with be able to host drumming projects every year.

Music Forge is funded by Youth Music and enables Rutland Music and Northamptonshire Music Education Hub to bring musical opportunities to children in challenging circumstances.

Rutland Music works closely with the Aiming High Team to provide activities and support services for SEND children and young people and their families.

The Sound Control initiative explores ways in which SEND children can access digital technology to enhance their music experiences.

The Relaxed Singalong team are usually based in Kettering, but have started to expand into Rutland and provide family-based singing and music-making activities.

Each year, during the spring and summer terms, Rutland Music work with schools to run a Recorder Jamboree, with composer Sarah Watts, and a Summer Sing.

Community Partners

Rutland Junior Strings is a string group for primary school age children in the Rutland and Stamford area. Rehearsals take place on Mondays during term time at 4.30 at Oakham C of E Primary School.

Rutland Youth String Orchestra is a new group for violin, viola, cello and double bass students aged 11-18.  Rehearsals take place on Mondays at 5.30pm at Oakham C of E Primary School.

Rutland Musical Theatre was founded in 1980 by a small group of people who were keen to start the first ‘Musical Theatre’ Society in the county. It was founded from a love of music and theatre generally and also to preserve the name of Rutland – which at that time was under threat.

Acting and non-acting members welcome.

The first show was Showboat, performed in Uppingham Theatre in April 1981, and the company continues to perform a major musical each April.

Rutland Youth Choirs is for children who love to sing, and comprises of two groups:

  • Young Voices – school years 1-4, 4.00-4.45pm
  • Junior Choir – school years 5-8, 4.30-5.30pm

Both Choirs rehearse at All Saints’ Church, Oakham, on Wednesdays during term time.  No experience is necessary and the choirs cover a wide range of musical styles as well as some music theory.
