The CYBigB is the senior big band of the Music and Performing Arts Trust and rehearses on Monday evenings in the Edmund Rubbra Hall at the Kettering Road Music and Arts Centre from 7pm to 9pm.
About the CYBigB
The director for the 2017 to 2018 season is
Will Osborn (pictured).
The Rhythm section meets for a sectional an hour before the main rehearsal, 6pm to 7pm, under the direction of Lee Smith. This invaluable opportunity allows the section to learn to play together as an effective unit.
The band was formed in the 1980's by Head of Brass, Bob Jackson. Since then under the direction of Rachel Coles, John Greaves, Peter Dunkley, Ray Meadham, John Long and Richard Baker it has built a national reputation for consistent quality.
The band draws its repertoire from the whole range of music for Big Bands, from traditional to modern: Duke Ellington to Pat Metheny. Members are encouraged to develop and use their improvisation skills in rehearsal and performance, with all contributions to the group valued equally.
They have enjoyed success at the National Concert Band Festival and
National Festival of Music for Youth, with several invitations to perform at the Schools' Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. They have toured to Northampton's twin town of Plzen in the Czech Republic and performed at the House of Commons. In recent years they have appeared with singer Becky Martin and trumpet players Steve Waterman and Willie Murrillo.
